Alzheimer's Disease: Nothing is fun about it, but you can help

Do you have a family member or friend with Alzheimer's Disease? If so, then you know all to well what it is like to see your loved one lose all those memories and forget who you are. Alzheimer's is a vicious disease which robs your loved of their identity and so much more.

Alzhimer's Disease is a progressive, degenerative disorder that attacks the brain's nerve cells and is the most common cause of dementia, or loss of intellectual function, among people aged 65 and older.

Have you ever wondered how this disease got it's name? Well, Alzheimer's disease dates back to 1906 when Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German physician, presented a case history before a medical meeting of a 51-year-old woman who suffered from a rare brain disorder. A brain autopsy identified the plaques and tangles that today characterize Alzheimer's disease.

Dementia is another form of memory loss which is in close relation to Alzehimer's. Dementia causes, in older people, poor judgment, language; loss of complex motor skills, and other intellectual function-caused by the permanent damage or death of the brain's nerve cells, or neurons. What happens is, there is are different pathologic, or structural, changes in the brain, such as an accumulation of abnormal plaques and tangles in individuals with Alzheimer's disease, and abnormal tau protein in individuals with frontotemporal dementia. This disease is similar in nature to Multiple Sclerosis patients where their mylen shethe this damaged and MS patients too lose their memory and some motor skills.
