Five of the Best Play Equipment Pieces for TwiceToddlers

When you have twins or triplets, key factors in providing them with great outdoor play experiences is to provide equipment that allows them to have interaction with each other when they want it, solitary activities when desired, good exercise for large muscle groups, and enough room and features to go around.

Five of the best outdoor play equipment pieces that meet these needs are sand pits, swing sets, climbing frames, slides and playhouse structures.

Often when space is short several of these elements can be combined in one multi-function piece of equipment – for instance, a swing set plus a slide; a slide plus a climbing frame, a playhouse and a slide.

Sand pits

Sand pits are one of the tried-and-true long-time family favorites. Not only does it allow for shoveling and manipulating sand which is good exercise, it allows for untrammelled use of imagination as whole highway systems, fields, construction zones, and castles are created.

With inexpensive additions like pails, buckets, plastic containers recycled from the kitchen and water for firming up sand, children can be occupied for hours. Children love the opportunity to harvest flowers from the perennial bed to decorate sand "cakes" for their sand pit tea parties.

Swing sets

Swing sets with multiple features, such as two swings, a glider, a larger seat and a slide provide many opportunities for interaction without shortage of materials for multiple children. Climbing up and down the slide and achieving height on the swing all call for good exercise.

Climbing Frames

Climbing frames also give plenty of strengthening exercise for arms and legs as children climb and swing by their arms. Structures can be used as imaginative play areas. Structure size should be determined by the number of children using it.

Slippery Slides

Slides give such a thrill, especially to younger children. The height and length of slide should be tailored to the age group of the children using it. A slide needs a certain amount of sharing as the sliding can only be done one at a time. But another function of outdoor play equipment is to promote cooperation and sharing, so this serves its purpose as well.

Play Structures & Treehouses

Playhouses or other play structures offer so many opportunities for shared and imaginative play. Whole days can be spent creating a world of unique scenarios in a space children can truly call their own. Some children would even wish to take naps or sleep overnight in their play structure.

TwiceToddlers and The Nice Evening

When my twins woke up from their nap, well, it certainly was a nice evening. Twin "A" wanted to stay in and watch "The Fox and the Hound". I turned it on for a while, then said, "The weather is really nice outside, let's go outdoors instead?" I had to prod her to get off her "tush" and go play outside. After a while, Twin "B" got up from her nap, I gave her some water and three marshmallows like her sister, Twin "A", and they both went outdoors and played in the nice weather with the big sidewalk chalk, where they made their version of a rainbow, their "big wheels", bicycles and played with their dollies.

Then, I made them a PB sandwich for dinner and gave them a little apple juice pouch with a little sweet carrot.

As they were playing outdoors, I was washing out laundry and watching them play on the driveway. We have a very long driveway with a fence at the end. So, they play in this area and safely ride their bikes on our home property. While I was washing the laundry, I was also preparing my indoor greenhouses with seeds of vegetables and flowers. I need to get some more seeds to plant for Spring and Summer.

Then, Daddy came home and they all went to the gym. At the gym tonight, they colored on some coloring pages and brought them home to me to see.

TwiceToddlers and Their Day with Ma Ti Ma

Ever since my twins were infants, one of our friends, Maria, has been seeing them grow up. Sometimes, she would watch them while Daddy and I went out for a date or just to take an hour break from them.

Well, as my twins are still growing up, they still like Ma Ti Ma. This is her "pet" name my twins have given her. It used to be that my twins would see her at least 2 to 3 times a month. But then, when Ma Ti Ma would drop them off back home, they would have fits. They love being out of the home and sometimes, I am not able to take them places. Especially when I am not feeling too well.

Today, Ma Ti Ma called Daddy and said she would like to take the twins out for a while. Now, Ma Ti Ma has is watching her grandson for a year because her daughter is in the military. My twins love her grandson and they are probably at McD's or a local park, playing and running outdoors in the nice weather we are having today.

Or, they might be at the mall, on the "MingoRound", as my twins call the Merry Go Round. They love that and would ride on that all day, if given the chance.

Anyway, Mommy is getting some time to herself. I have been listening to my radio programs online and doing laundry, fixing my hair and getting my lunch heated up, in the oven.

It is almost 2:30, wow this day certainly has gone by fast. So,this is how I am spending my Abraham Lincoln's Birthday. At home, by myself, with only the sound of the birds singing outside, planes flying over my home and cars driving very fast down my residential street.

That is right, No TV on today. It is nice, the quietness of my home. Even if for a little while. But, when my twins come home, I will be hugging and kissing them and asking how their day went with Ma Ti Ma..
